Happy reveal day! I can’t express how exciting and downright fun this kitchen makeover has been to execute and see come to life. After doing my own three-year renovation-to-reveal process on our farmhouse, it has been incredibly satisfying to turn around a kitchen makeover in less than two months (!!). If you are just landing here today and this is all new to you, you’re going to want to head to this post to see all the before photos and read about the budget, timeline, and needs and wants of the homeowner. Then come back studied up and take in this beauty fully.
To help them launch their new line of renovation products, I collaborated with Crate & Barrel to give a new life to this kitchen. In just a bit, you’ll see the stunning kitchen island from the collection but know that there is so much more: a few kitchen island options, bathroom vanities, hardware, and, of course, lighting and accessories. Our reader/homeowner, Julie, submitted her kitchen for the makeover and we felt like it was the perfect space that checked all our boxes—timeline, budget, style, and the right space to show off the island. Then, we got to work. I hired a familiar team to me including my former PDX assistant, Sarah Weldon, to project manage and do all the renderings needed, as well as my brother Ken to be the contractor and manage all the subs. I have to say it went SO WELL, with a few normal problem-solving opportunities that we honestly sailed through together.

Before
As a reminder, the kitchen before had a ton of potential and was ripe for a surface-level glow-up as it didn’t need any new electrical or plumbing, no walls moved, and no engineering—all cosmetic. Here was our to-do list again:
- Install new panel-ready appliances + functioning range
- Remove uppers and replace with open shelving and a new hood
- Refinish ceiling (check yesterday’s post for what we did)
- Add new hardware, faucet, and lighting
- Paint and wallpaper
We’d keep the following:
- Existing layout
- All the lower cabinets (and bank of drawers), as well as the sink
- Flooring
- Paneling (it would just need to be patched and painted)
- Countertops, cutting where needed (they are pretty good and replacing them is a real thing)
The whole project took almost two months, seven sub-contractors, and a lot of hard work by my team to get her done. While this is a faster and more budget-friendly kitchen remodel as compared to most, we wanted to be real about the amount of time and effort that went into it because it’s still a lot. My hope is that you can glean ideas and information from this makeover that you could implement in your own remodel.

It’s hard for me not to scream HOW GOOD IS THIS but I guess I just did. We love it so very much, can you blame me? This kitchen now has so much personality, a real point of view, and a lot of whimsical touches rendered in a really fresh way. The colors all work so well together to give it depth and a real sense of space, while the island complements it all and adds so much function. Note how well the tones of the veining on the stone work with the green cabinetry. ::chef’s kiss::

The floral wallpaper is by Kelly Ventura and was the real jumping-off point for the room’s color palette. We pulled the green (Rosemary by Sherwin-Williams) and the light blue/green of the backsplash (Conservative Gray by Sherwin-Williams) from the pattern and, frankly, I was ecstatic to do a pink and green kitchen. We weren’t able to see the stone in person for the island so we were very pleased to see so much green in the veining. Integrating the appliances went a long way to making the kitchen feel more streamlined and modern. It wasn’t a ton of cabinetry to begin with so eliminating the visual stop of an appliance front like, say, the dishwasher, goes a long way to streamline the design. If you’re curious to learn more about how to integrate your appliances without replacing all of your cabinetry, stay tuned because we’re working on that post. For this space, it was still a $4,000 investment, but far cheaper than gutting it all.
For the new hood, we bought a hood insert and integrated it into a simple boxed cabinet that we trimmed out with a little detail on the bottom. It’s painted the same color as the beadboard since there was enough going on between the green and the floral wallpaper. While I did mention we were keeping the existing beadboard, we ended up needing to replace what was behind the range since we extended it higher than it was prior when it met the upper cabinets that were removed. That was one of our unforeseen hiccups, but it was affordable and readymade so my brother was able to source the matching profile and get it up.
The Island
Now for the reason for the season. This whole kitchen partnership with Crate & Barrel was to feature this island which is one of the four that they just launched. Before we had even selected the kitchen we were going to makeover, I chose the Terra 78″ Marble Top and Natural Oak Wood Kitchen Island with Storage because I responded quickly to it, stylistically, and I knew it could work with so many different styles. In addition to this one, they have others that are more contemporary or more traditional. The Terra is so simple and high quality, the white oak and marble are timeless and classic, and it’s extremely functional in both prep, storage, and seating. It is priced really well for what you get and comes totally built with white glove service (extremely plug-and-play).
Mixing Bowls | Baking Dishing | Measuring Cups | Dish Towel
On top, you have three great drawers for flatware, utensils, and placemats. On the left side, you have really deep pull-out drawers which I’d use for trash and recycling. In the middle section, you have two deep drawers for larger items like mixing bowls, big pots/pans, and baking dishes. Then on the right is another pull-out drawer for a stand mixer or stock pot, as well as a shelf option should you want to put other larger pots or bowls. It’s HIGHLY functional and well thought out. Bonus points? The drawers soft close like a dream.

On the back side, you have a 14.5-inch overhang which is ample for sitting and with the opening being 68 inches, you can fit three large-sized stools perfectly.
Pot Rack | Cast Iron Oven | Ceramic Olive Oil Cruet
The marble top is a honed solid stone with a lot of subtle veining for forgiveness. We were so impressed with this particular stone; it had so many soft golden and green tones and the Crate & Barrel team pulled no stops in its quality. It absolutely does not look readymade. Something to note for anyone with a sink or cooktop/range in their existing island is that you’ll have to relocate those. This island is perfect for a kitchen like this that had a freestanding furniture piece that could be replaced with a more functional island. That, or a kitchen with no island at all that has the walk-around clearance for one.

Our homeowner Julie (who understandably didn’t want to be on camera) is an antiques dealer and she had this incredible collection of ironstone platters. We happily leaned into this and, after arranging them outside on the floor of the deck (ha!), displayed them all on the wall. Julie assisted us and glued plate hangers to the back of each one and then we just went for it. I couldn’t love it more. You can see a lot of the age and different designs of the rims. This collection comes from years of scouring the markets and I’m so grateful that we got to display them for her (and us).
Hardware
In case you don’t remember the “before,” this bank of drawers had so much hardware with handles upon handles that made it look really busy. Sarah did a fantastic job of reconfiguring the new hardware in a way that was more modern and subdued. We combined one simple brass micro-knob on the tiny drawers and one pull on the larger ones which gives them more power and more presence, with less. This hardware is gorgeous with round backs and a sweet little round detail on the handle, too.
Bowl | Wooden Mortar and Pestle
I can’t stress enough the importance of mixing knobs and handles to make something feel truly custom and well-designed. They just complement each other so well and are scaled proportionally to the size of the drawers. We also loved that the island didn’t need hardware (it has finger pulls cut into the top of the drawers) so that it could be more of a standalone piece (think like the one in the farmhouse where we did the bank of cabinets in one color/hardware, but let the island be its own thing that still worked so well).
Lighting
We needed to replace the lighting over the island to have more presence and be scaled better for the large island. We found this linear pendant with two shades that worked perfectly in our design plan. The white and warm brass was exactly what this needed to not be too distracting with the lower ceilings. This fixture also comes with drop options for the length and can be much higher if you have higher ceilings (the rods can screw together in certain increments to give you more length options). Because Julie has two sons that are really tall, we wanted to go above their eye-line and not be right in their face, so we dropped this pendant a foot down (plus the shades).

I get goosebumps every time I see this shot. The colors are so magical and you don’t even notice the simple stone that she already had because it works so well with the two green tones. One of our unpredicted costs was to get a stone cutter on site to take down the old backsplash that was there, drill an extra hole for our new faucet and remove part of the stone behind the range so we could slide it in further. We mixed both Julie’s pieces with a lot from Crate for the styling, keeping it warm, whimsical, and modern. Her two boys are grown (but still live with her at times) so her storage needs were far less than when they were little and she was excited to get the uppers gone and still be able to look at some pretty things. We offered to put all of her original plates and bowls up here when we left, but she didn’t want us to touch the styling so we left everything as-is (including the garlic). Julie, you were A DREAM to work with. I’ve never done a makeover with someone that was so legitimately helpful and so generous. She even gave me three of my favorite seascapes! Thank you, Julie!
Before And Afters
And now for some dopamine-inducing before and afters in the ever-gratifying side-by-side format to see what was accomplished. I wish I could give you all an in-person tour because once you are in this kitchen, it just SINGS. What an incredibly fun and satisfying job this was. Crate & Barrel was so wonderful to work with, Julie was so lovely, my team killed it, and I get to stand here and give the glow of some serious collective hard work and pride. This project was such a great reminder that when you push things a bit with color and pattern, it all pays off in the end. Being in this kitchen is such a joy.
The whole room turned out just so dreamy, fresh, modern, and sweet, and with the help of the new Crate & Barrel kitchen island, also highly functional. So beautiful! Replacing handles, especially for the drawer wall is huge. Wow.
Were the ceiling spotlights photoshopped, or removed and the wood filled in? Comparing side to side is a bit unfair if one side was photoshopped. The same goes for photoshopping in general: The counters are much darker and more present before than after, due to photo editing. Always better lighting afterwards and dark and wonky before.
Hi! I just noticed that once you said it. Yes the photo editing team for Crate must have edited them out (they weren’t obviously the focus of the partnership and I could see why they would be distracting). So much has to do with camera and lighting as well. We actually massively brightened the photos in the befores so you could see things better. xx
Thank you for answering. Later I saw the light cans in the story on instagram. It is always a pity that the before and after pics don´t match with normal “life” (same for garden, make-up or fashion make-over). In a perfect world the before pics should be photo shopped as well. Biut I know that no one would pay for that extra work.
My husband gets so upset about this. He’s like “of course the after looks better – the before is an iphone snapshot while the after is beautifully lighted and shot, and sometimes photoshopped.” But I get the reasoning and it does look beautiful!
I wonder whether the effect of colour (as well as some PS) plays a part in the counters appearing darker – against the white cupboards the grey countertop will naturally appear much darker than it will against the dark green. Adelson’s checker shadow illusion is a great example of this (A & B are the same colour). Then the white beadboard also reflects light onto the shiny countertop. If you look at the shot with the apple slices, the countertop is quite dark in the corner behind the canisters. Just a thought.
Okay … That’s it! I’m now DEFINITELY painting my lower cupboards green! I’ve been sitting on thefence for soooooo long, paint samples all over the kitchen. This convinced me. Yaaay!🤗
The wallpaper is so sweet and not much of it brings such a a big style punch.

I used SW Connected Gray in my previous kitchen and it was a perfect neutral green! (Though that kitchen had very little natural light; in my new house the same color just looks gray because of all that natural light.)

Wow. Really love the Rosemary green paint on the cabinets. I was surprised to see the beadboard paint was gray as it looks white in the photos. The wallpaper really does bring the whole room together. Quite a stunning space with A LOT of storage. #jealous 🙂
The beadboard is a blue/green/gray that changes a lot from angle to angle depending on lighting. We really didn’t want a ‘gray’, and it can also go very light (but its not white). xx

The kitchen turned out so cute, and I absolutely love the Crate and Barrell island. It’s perfect! I’m curious, though, where did the microwave go? I struggled with that decision when we did a remodel of our kitchen and ended up leaving it above the stove, just because it was easier. I don’t think it looks the best above the stove, so I’m always curious what other people do when the microwave is not above the stove.
HI! we moved the microwave into the separate pantry (which we painted, but didn’t shoot). So its inside a cupboard in there 🙂

Just wow! This is the first time I’ve seen white oak used and not felt like it was trendy and wished for more depth of color. The whole space is just gorgeous and feels so unique and personal. LOVE the plate wall. LOVE the green and pink.

LOVE all of this and especially the incredible functionality of the island! I have been searching everywhere for an island that stores (hides) trash cans. Hopefully they’ll expand this design to include different sizes as it is currently it is wayyyy too large for my humble kitchen. Fantastic post(s) – love the budget transparency and that it seems almost attainable!

Really beautiful work, congrats! Why do the countertops look so much lighter in the after shots? Were they altered in some way or is it just the lighting? I love almost every detail and appreciate the explanation about the knobs and pulls. The only thing I would change, not that anyone asked lol, is the plate wall. It feels too busy to me. I would scale back to somewhere between Julie’s original version and the new one.
Forgot to say, I’d love to hear details of why you were so drawn to this particular island stylistically. It’s certainly beautiful (and so practical) but when I looked at C&B’s choices, Terra is not the one I would have guessed would be the EHD favorite, especially over the more traditional models. Genuinely interested in the design elements that appealed to you on this one. I’m always trying to “raise my taste level” and this kind of info would be very helpful!
That’s interesting because I actually like it a lot better seeing more plates to fill that space. Before the plates looked beautiful but felt a little lonely or random. Now it all feels very intentional and it’s extra special that it is a collection of the owner and not just random decoration.
Plus the wallpaper framing that plate wall really highlights the area. Very pretty.

Yes please!! When we redid our kitchen earlier this year I found the paneled refrigerator to be prohibitively expensive. So curious about how you did the paneling AND which refrigerator you purchased and kept things in budget.
I think this is one of my favorite renos ever, and that’s saying something! The homeowner must twirl around every time she walks through this lovely kitchen. The knobs/pulls make such a difference, as does painting the doors to the outside. I could *not* imagine how the delicate wallpaper would play out after seeing it on your mood board, but it’s beautiful without being “too much”.

So pretty! I love the green cabinets and beadboard backsplash. If I need to add an island in a future home, I would definitely look at Crate & Barrel. This makes me realize how lucky we were to have such a great contractor when we did our kitchen remodel. We got it done in less than 4 weeks and it included new cabinets, an added peninsula, added bar area, quartz countertops, backsplash, etc. for about $15k not including appliances.

Question: I notice Julie had an old-style bridge faucet originally, and opted for a more modern bridge faucet with pull-down for this update. Does anyone know if that was more of a functional choice, or an aesthetic choice? I can see how the modern style plays well with the island, but I’m also curious if Julie found the bridge faucet tedious and felt the pull-down would be an upgrade? Wondering because I have only ever used pull-down faucets, but love the look of a bridge faucet, and am on the fence about how much I’d miss the function. Thanks! 🙂

I may be in the minority here but I don’t particularly like the trend of disguising appliances. Every other detail lands for me, though! The combination of pink and green is soooo pretty!
I am so with you on not disguising appliances! IMO it’s a good thing for a kitchen to look just like a kitchen and seems silly and kinda pointless to attempt otherwise. My new kitchen won’t even have panel-ready fridge and freezer because I’m doing a glass-door fridge. I love the utilitarian look of beautiful stainless-steel appliances and think (hope) it’s a timeless vibe.
The only time I’ve liked it is on the show called “Restored” with Bret Waterman. It used to be on the DIY channel. I think it’s on that Gaines’ channel now. He accurately restores vintage and antique properties, and one of the highlights of his work is his refrigerators made to look like old time ice boxes.
I think there is a time and place for everything, for sure and very much depends on the style and function of the kitchen (and its chef). I think chefs like seeing their fancy fridges and I get that. but as a design enthusiast, its a ‘lets try to avoid it when we can’ for me. Curious how we’ll all feel about this in 20 years. I think that many brands have to pick up on this, too. Bluestar has so many customizable fridge/dishwasher and range colors – i think thats more of the future (I also like Cafe Appliances, FYI). WE just need more affordable options than stainless (even white is an excellent option, but I could sell the heck out of a copper/rose gold fridge)
What did you use to fill the holes from the old hardware on the cabinets where the new hardware was placed in a different spot?
The painter did all of this – he filled/sanded then we drilled new holes 🙂

THIS IS AMAZING! I actually really loved the kitchen before. But the changes really give it such punch and make it sing. It’s incredible what a big difference integrating the frig and dishwasher do for the space. The wallpaper is such an unexpected choice and it brings it all together so well. The styling is perfection. Everything. Emily, this is where you and your team truly shine.

Beautiful! I especially love how the ceiling turned out. It’s so nice to see such a big impact on a small budget too! My only question is on timeline – seven weeks feels like such a long time! By comparison, I’m in the midst of a (granted, much more expensive) kitchen remodel with complete demo, all new appliances, custom cabinets, structural work and wall removals, along with a full master bath gut, and the entire project is tracking at 9-10 weeks (I’m in the Seattle area). This project turned out gorgeous(!!), but I can’t help but feel like there could have been more done in 7 weeks?
haha. we could have tightened the timeline for sure but we gave ourselves time in case something went wrong so there was some buffer time for sure. But if you are tracking at 9-10 weeks I don’t know what to say except a huge congratulations. Thats incredible. I think we knew that if we did it more HGTV style (aka not exactly high quality work) it could have been under a month, but no one wants to work like (subs hate working on top of each other) that or deliver a kitchen like that either. congrats on your remodel. xx
It’s beautiful, so sweet and joyful! A charmer for sure. Morning coffee or tea would definitely taste better in this space. I was wondering though, is there a way we could stop doing the digital removal of can lights for the picture? It implies that the whole room is lit by a single fixture and hides the reality of the fact that real houses have cans because it’s an effective wash. Plays into the whole “overhead lighting makes me ill” frenzy without a proper solution. I don’t think this is your intention, I bet it’s just industry reflex, but that’s why I think it’s worth asking. You always keep it real with us and that’s something we so appreciate!
We didn’t remove them (I try not to for that exact reason) but these photos are meant first for the CB website to sell the island and i’m sure those cans were detracting from the product – the island. So I totally get some very simple edits to make the shot cleaner. On principal we just really try to put stuff in front of outlets (for example) rather than photoshopping them all out. Were there any steps taken or special paint used to limit chips in the cabinets?
these were taken off and sprayed with a special lacquer mixture with multiple coats and sanding in between. We had a professional do it, and we weren’t there to witness it but to avoid the chips its a real process.
Stunning! I only wish the ceiling had been kept the same, I dont love the new tone, it just feels flat, but thats just my preference. The wallpaper is so so so good. I adore the cabinet fronts and the island is tdf. If there was a bigger budget I wonder if the range hood might have been a bit more special, feels like a missed opportunity!
I am wowed by this. It’s just such a great transformation with excellent details. It’s so warm and full of personality. I want to salute the stylist who chose that plant for the shelf with the dainty leaves that mimicked the wallpaper. I just love that.

Cute, love the colors. We have our plates in drawers now and it works well. Might just be the angle of the photos but does the oven open all the way? Looks pretty tight.
So pretty! I love the green cabinets with the floral wallpaper. I know the Crate photo team edited the shots but I’d love to see a less edited version to see how the countertops actually look with the cabinetry color updates.
they honestly look really accurate to me (I think that the before photos had to be brightened a lot to even see what was going on because I just used an iphone). they are a medium gray, with some warmth flecks in them (a pretty generic quartz i think). so to me it looks pretty accurate – maybe check the video on social because that might be easier to tell there?

What a beautiful transformation. And thanks for showing the Crate and Barrel hardware. When I took a closer look at their website, I realized that they have so many towel bars and hooks and other hardware that screw directly into the walls. A huge pet peeve of mine is hardware that you have to attach to a separate piece that is screwed into the wall (I don’t know the vocabulary for this configuration). They always get loose over time, and are pretty much all you find at the big box stores. So many great options at C&B.

The island is making me envious. What a great anchoring piece. The green cabinet color also is really good. Most of this is not my personal style, but I still love it because it all works together so well. As a former Chicagoan, I am chuckling a bit at the use of “Crate” as I don’t think I’ve every heard anyone do that before. It’s always Crate and Barrel or C&B.
